O'Brien's Briar Patch

This MUST Be Answered!

Each day, the lack of hard hitting, relentless reporting in the Peoria area makes me want to throw up. Too many stories go without required follow up and unanswered left flat on the floor. Area reporters in this area should be ashamed.

In today's Peoria Journal Star there is a report where a man abducted and sexually assaulted a teenager on Peoria's South End. The man has been arrested and is in jail.

Now, here is the paragraph that has me not upset, irritated or angry, but red-hot livid and boiling mad:
Hinkle was also arrested in August and booked on charges of criminal sexual assault and again in September for two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, but according to circuit clerk records he was never charged for either crime.
Go back and re-read this paragraph again and then someone, explain to the citizens of Peoria, why is this story not screaming for follow-up and where are the answers? How has this predator been allowed to remain on the streets of Peoria? HOW!!!

I had the exact same reaction as you. I did a search of the Journal Star archives trying to find out any more info on his previous arrests but came up short.

Scott, I called HOI this morning and pointed them to your site. You bring up an excellent question and I hope it gets the attention it deserves. This is an outrage. Great Job!! Thanks

Scott,

One thing that makes me really angry is that the story is RIGHT there and up front in that single paragraph.

Now, I'm not trying to take anything away from the actual reporter - I bet as soon as he learned of that information he was asking questions, but in a case like this, where is the other media? And what is so shameful about WHOI, WMBD or WEEK following up on other information developed by a PJS reporter?

These acts reportedly have happened in the last SIX months.

Who the fuck are you to question any reporter in this town? You ever done it? It's not like the reporter only gets to work on one story every morning. There's five or six stories everyday....and here's a surprise, when your trying to do those stories, the people you're trying to do them with don't exactly drop everything they're doing.

I encourage you to call the State's Attorney's office and ask for an interview. You may get a call back from Kevin Lyons in 5 years. Guess what...just because you think a questions demands an answer, doesn't mean he's going to make himself available to answer it. Did you happen to notice HOW HOI got Lyons? They asked him the question once the camera was already rolling for another interview where they jackpotted Lyons at a Neighborhood House event.

In Peoria, you're dealing with reporter's right out of college with little to no experience..yeah Mac and Mike have been here 50 years but they're not the ones on the street. They're not the ones making the decisions. Assignment Editors...producers..etc....the decision makers, are all under 30. DOes that scream good news judgement to you? Most of these kids get their story ideas from Poynter...do a google search for Al's Morning Meeting...then watch the news that night and see how many stories they did.

Resources are limited and it's more important to get quantity than quality. If you have a problem with that, there's a TV station licsence coming up to auction soon....go grab it and see how easy it is.

Look, this isn't as simple as he wants to make it out to be. You will need to get the police reports and then talk to Lyons to find out why...

It's not as easy as you want to make it.

Anonymous,

I posted one reply, but then came back and deleted it. It was a bit over the top.

I'll tell you who I am to question reporters and the media and that is a citizen who reads quite a bit and am tired of simplistic reporting by those who could do better.

Go back and re-read the paragraph I highlighted. First, I give kudos for the reporter who learned that information. I really do. But the rest of the local media should be embarrassed at the STILL lack of follow up regarding that paragraph.

This predator has attacked THREE females that we know of and what have we got in form of a reply? A tepid, safe response from the supposed chief law enforcement officer in the county.

As for reporters working hard, many people work hard, but that is no excuse for the local media and it's lack of insightful and in depth reporting.

For example, look at the recent city manager fire/resignation story. Someone is lying because the story does not add up. Nor do many other local stories.

And if the media has problems getting public officials to make comments, then don't cover these people when they call press conferences. It's a two way street.

Lastly, I am a parent and while the local media was providing countless coverage over the idiotic smoking ban, two other females in this town were victimized.

But hey, who the fuck am I? I'm just a person who is tired of the supposed fourth estate and its claims it is our last safeguard against a corrupt government. Especially when it continues covering stories like hawks in bathrooms while ignoring stories that really do matter.
