Note To PJS, Other Media - Give us a break on the smoking ban countdown..

All the coverage the local paper and media is giving the upcoming smoking ban is ridiculous. Every edition of the PJS for the past few days has had some sort of front page article counting down to when these new laws take place.

Give us a break. Instead of continuing to over-cover this story, why don't these media outlets instead focus on more important local stories.

I mean, let's take a look at the current city government issues. Apparently several top level city employees are leaving, getting fired or looking for new jobs while denying so. What is going on? Is the city council that hard to deal with? And does anyone even seem to care about what that means for day to day business of the city while all this is going on? And is that old saying asking the last person leaving Peoria to turn out the lights due for a return?

Or how about the economic development going on in East Peoria while the city of Peoria is asleep at the wheel and for some reason missing out on much needed pro-growth river front development.

So what do we get? An endless amount of smoking stories and countless pictures and videos of people sucking on cancer sticks, while other important stories are underreported.

Do any of the facilities hosting the 40 Days of Prayer allow smoking? Now THAT would be a story.

I'm glad the ban is going into place, but I agree that the local media coverage of this issue has been nauseatingly excessive.

I'll admit that I have mixed feelings.

On one hand I can understand a business wanting to attract smokers.
If people want to smoke, let'em. I'll eat out at places that don't allow smoke.

On the other hand, there is the OSHA type issue (exposure of workers to a known health hazard.)

I'll relay one thought: I drive though Oklahoma frequently, and they did something like this.

In past years, I'd only stop at chains because I knew that they had no-smoking sections. Now, every place is smoke free, and so I give non-chains a chance and am glad that I did.

Sure, I don't stop by that often, BUT there are many, many travelers who drive through, and perhaps many like me.

Of course, I'd need to see a study to see if there is an impact.
